Adult Mental Health Services

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: This type of talk therapy can be used in individual or family sessions and often helps participants who are dealing with depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, trouble sleeping, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), substance abuse issues, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or sexual problems.

  • Grief Therapy: Grief therapy is a specialized, often short-term, therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process the intense emotional, cognitive, and physical pain following a significant loss. It offers a safe environment to explore feelings, understand the grieving process, and develop healthy coping mechanisms to adapt to a changed reality. Techniques include talk therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to challenge unhelpful thoughts, and expressive arts to process emotions.

Adolescent Mental Health Services

  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT): This type of talk therapy is often used with children who have experienced traumatic life events, including child sexual or physical abuse, as well as their non-offending parent or caregiver. The goal is to instill coping skills that help individuals process their trauma and minimize any related difficulties.

Children & Family Mental Health Services

  • Parent-Child Psychotherapy & Parent-Child Interaction Therapy: This type of therapy is intended to treat disruptive behavior and emotional difficulties in young children.

  • Family Therapy: This is a form of group therapy that focuses on improving the relationships and behaviors among family members.

Rural Mental Health Counselor

Rural Mental Health Counselor Jacob May is pictured.

Jacob May, LPC-A has spent the past 10 years serving in education as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and counselor. He lives in Lufkin, where he met his wife and began raising his family while serving as youth pastor at Providence Baptist Church, a role he has faithfully held for the past decade. Having been bi-vocational throughout his career, Jacob couples his professional work in education and counseling with more than 15 years of ministry experience. He completed a community counseling program at Stephen F. Austin State University and is a certified biblical counselor through Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is also a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPC-A) supervised by V. Jean Stanley, LP, LPC-S, LSOTP-S.

Jacob uses a flexible counseling approach that draws from a variety of proven therapeutic methods. When appropriate and desired by the client, he can also incorporate faith-based perspectives into the counseling process. His work focuses on helping clients understand their thoughts, experiences, and personal values so that treatment can be tailored to each individual’s unique needs. Prior to his time in education, Jacob served as a crisis counselor at The Burke Center, where he provided assessments and follow-up mental health services to individuals in crisis. His work regularly took him into the community – meeting clients in hospitals, jails, shelters, and nonprofit centers – to provide care where they were and help them rebuild their lives. After a decade in education, his recent role as an assistant principal and secondary counselor has reignited his passion for counseling. Jacob is eager to expand his services into the greater Angelina County community, serving adolescents and adults with compassion, clinical competence, and a holistic perspective.
