Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are passed from one person to another through sexual activity, including vaginal, oral and anal sex. They are very common and millions of new infections occur every year.

There are several different types of STIs. They don’t always cause symptoms, so it is possible to have an STI and not know it. That’s why it’s important to get tested if you are having sex. Some STIs can cause serious complications, but all of them can be treated with medicine and some can be cured.

If you are having sex, it’s important to get tested.

STDs are preventable. If you are having sex, you should know how to protect yourself and your partner from STDs. We can answer any questions you have about safe sex practices.

Important Notice Regarding STD Services

Due to a lack of state funding, the State of Texas did not allocate funds for STD (sexually transmitted disease) services. As a result, Local Health Departments' ability to offer free STD services to the general public has been impacted. The following changes will go into effect on October 1, 2025.

For Individuals with Insurance:

  • If you have commercial insurance or Medicaid, please visit your primary care physician or medical home for STD-related services.
  • If you choose not to use your insurance, the Health District can provide an office visit and treatment (if needed) for a fee of $60.00.

For Uninsured Individuals:

  • If you do not have insurance, you are welcome to visit the Health District’s Eligibility Department to determine if you qualify for discounted or covered services.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we navigate these funding limitations. If you need help, visit our Angelina County Connects location at 503 Hill Street in Lufkin or call (936) 633-1442.
